This is an exact reproduction of a chess set made around 1810 by John Calvert in England. A number of modern stores often mistakenly advertise this as a 1795 reproduction. John Calvert was a Master of the Worshipful Company of Turners in London, their shop was located at 189 Fleet Street, from around 1790 to about 1840. Early games made in ivory by master carvers and turners were often in red and white, or green and white combinations.
The faux-ivory set of 32 pieces comes in a beautiful hardwood box with an inlaid chessboard top. Mahogany finished box with drawers and space for each individual piece. The king piece is 3.5 inches tall.
