We are happy to offer a much-needed item in the model engineering community. This is a fan-cooled, .40 HP DC motor with an AC variable speed control, and a removable pulley fitted for Sherline size drive belts. This lathe or mill power unit is intended for giving many older hobby machines a modern variable speed motor drive.
This variable speed motor and controller combination has been used with much success from tiny watchmaker lathes all the way up to the famous Atlas Craftsman 618 lathe.
Specifications are noted below:
- 90v DC motor with externally replaceable brushes
- motor is fan cooled
- HP rating of .40 (2/5 HP, which is in between 1/3 and 1/2 HP)
- AC to DC variable speed drive assembly - two green ground wires provided
- variable speed drive incorporates an automatic torque sensor, boosting the torque if RPM slows down during cuts
- can be wired to be reversible
- safety key switch (key is removable)
- overload protection
- 375 to 1600 motor shaft RPM - infinitely adjustable - estimated RPM range
- 5/16" diameter motor shaft
- 1-5/16" diameter pulley (included) fits Sherline belts - can be machined to fit 3/8" belts
- two 9/32" diameter mounting holes are spaced at 3-3/4" apart
- overall length of motor assembly is 8"
- mounting plate is designed to allow adjustment for belt tension, a nice feature for best performance
- mounting plate is removable
- accepts standard US household voltage
- three-wire plug (US standard ground)
- can be used on CNC (computer numerical control) machines and on manually controlled machines
