One of our more impressive aircraft models in this price range, the Spad XIII, was a legend in the European skies during World War One. This aeroplane was French built, and was the machine of choice for American pilots, serving in the United States Air Corp's 94th Squadron. It is this squadron, that our model replicates, with the authentic insignia warpaint, Uncle Sam's top hat set in a ring.
One of the most famous American pilots during that war was non other than Eddie Rickenbacker. He was especially skilled in air-to-air combat, or dog fights as they are known. Captain Rickenbacker became an ace during the war, shooting down 26 German aircraft. Having a late start in the war, he might of surpassed the victories that the famous Red Baron claimed. Capt. Rickenbacker went on to become president of Eastern Airlines in the 1950's.
Our model of the Spad VIII is fitted with a replica Hispano Suiza rotary engine (outer details). It has a painstakingly built-up wooden airframe covered with fabric, just like the original. Twin machine guns, hand-fitted wire spoked landing wheels, a detailed cockpit with leather-covered seat, instrumentation, and exterior cross-hair gunsights complete the details. Our version comes with a real wooden laminated propeller. The model won't do 133 mph like the original did during the Great War, but it will look good hanging over your office desk or suspended over a bedroom window. We also offer custom-built display cases for all of our models we sell, please view the options below for details.
